Kerrie Sumner Murphy is an incredible educator, artist, activist, and mom. On Saturday November 17th, Kerrie went into a coma while visiting friends in Olympia, WA. She was rushed to St. Peters Providence Hospital where doctors found it hard to diagnose her condition, but now feel confident that Kerrie suffered a stroke in her sleep.

Over the past week and a half, she has had some lucid moments, but struggles with basic motor skills and appears to have some memory loss. Doctors are still performing tests and are unsure of what will be permanent and what can be improved with occupational and physical therapy. The best recovery outcome could take up to a year of in-home care.

Unfortunately, the home that Kerrie shares with her husband, Thomas W. Murphy, and two adorable cats, is not accessible for someone in her condition. Kerrie's family have already begun to prepare for renovations to their unfinished basement, so that Kerrie may have a new room that is accessible from the ground floor and designed to meet her new needs.

Many have asked how they can help our family during this time. If you are financially able to give even a small amount, it will help to take some of the burden off of Kerrie and her family during this difficult time. Funds raised will also go towards the unexpected medical costs that Kerrie's insurance does not cover.

Thank you so much and we appreciate any form of support.

The Edmonds CC powwow committee is planning a surprise honoring of Kerrie this Sat evening after the 7 pm grand entry in the Seaview Gymnasium on the EdCC campus. I’m sure she would love to see you there if you can join in honoring her 20 years of contributions to this annual powwow.

While Kerrie has made tremendous progress over the past five months, it is now clear that more time is needed and full recovery may not be a realistic goal. After consulting with her doctor yesterday we have decided to request an additional three month disability leave (without pay) from UW. This is the maximum disability leave allowed. Her vision remains impaired with no significant improvements over five months. She still suffers from mobility, fine motor skill, and cognitive impairments as well as fatigue that make even a part-time work schedule impractical. This impending loss of pay coincides with about $4,000 outstanding on our accessibility remodel costs, $2,400 denial of a medical claim on our flexible saving account because the costs were from 2018 not 2019, and a $2,800 tax bill. I want to assure friends and family that we are now pursuing disability benefits (but even if approved, there is a waiting period) and a possible medical retirement (if needed after another work readiness evaluation in August). Any help to get us through this crunch while I pursue a more sustainable long-term plan would be helpful. Thanks!

Hey everyone, we got news yesterday that Kerrie (my mom) will not be able to go back to work, even part-time, for at least the next 3 months. The doctor and occupational therapist are unsure about when/if she will able to work in the same way she did before. I won’t bore you with the details, but we also found out that there was some funding we were counting on that didn’t come through. All this, of course, has put significant financial strain on Kerrie & Tom (my parents). Even though we have met our original goal, my parents have been left with about $2,500 in medical bills $4,000 in renovation bills. If you have more to give or haven’t already, please consider donating to the GoFundMe. We are so appreciative of those who gave the first time around. I was blown away by the support and love for my mom & our family. At the very least, if you don’t mind sharing the campaign again. Thank you endlessly.

With generous support from more than 230 family and friends we have been able to nearly complete our previously unfinished ground floor with an accessible master bath and bed and an accessible laundry, toilet, and shower. Only the fireplace and a closet remain to be finished. Kerrie is now continuing her recovery in the basement that was previously just a twelve-year-old dream. THANK YOU ALL!
