Kendall Mills

Tax deductible
My name is Kendall Mills, born and raised in the Roxbury section of Boston, MA. I’m a 2017 graduate of Fontbonne Academy High School in Milton, MA and am looking forward to beginning the next journey of
my life.

I plan to attend Howard University in the fall of 2017 to pursue a major in African American Studies. I aspire to become a Civil Rights Lawyer because from an early age I witnessed and became familiar with far too many social injustices that my family, friends and people of color experienced on a daily basis. In some cities like Boston and others across these United States of America, racism, income equality, and again, social injustices have become the norm and it’s majority minority and low-income people who seem to endure this the most.

I know I’m only 18 years old, but that is old enough to remember as an elementary and middle school student attending a majority white private-independent school deal with acts of racism on a regular basis. My peers would talk about me and say I’m only attending this school on a scholarship because I was Black and poor. Little did I know my single mother was struggling to pay my tuition because I did not receive a full scholarship only a partial scholarship but I was too afraid to tell me mom in fear she would say something so I kept it to myself. As an only child, I watched my mother work very hard my entire life to ensure that I always had food, shelter and clothes. I know I’m destined for greatness because my mom always said where there’s a will there is a way.

As excited as I am that I was accepted into Howard University, I was not awarded any financial aid. I’ve been applying for scholarships after scholarship to try to help with the tuition so I will be very grateful for any donation towards my college expenses.

I am a well-rounded individual. I’ve been volunteering in my community since I could walk, my mom used to take me to shelter with her to help feed the homeless and I’ve continued volunteering for non-profit organizations over the past 16 years. I played basketball, soccer, track, and cheerleading, throughout my school years and engaged in other community activities like gospel choir, dancing-tap, jazz, hip hop and piano. I’m very passionate about politics and am very committed to helping fight racism and social injustices for those who cannot do so on their own.
