Dear Friends,
In March of 2019, I will be traveling to Guatemala with an amazing group of Registered Nurses from WakeMed. This medical mission will be with Curamericas Global, working in small, remote Mayan communities in northwest Guatemala. One of these areas is nicknamed the "Triangle of Death" due to extremely high rates of maternal and infant mortality.
As Health Workers with Curamericas, we will be providing education on health topics such as breastfeeding, hand hygiene and child spacing to mothers in their homes. We will also be providing health services such as vaccinations, prenatal visits and family planning services at their Casa Materna Maternity clinics. Cureamericas has been able to establish 4 of these clinics. They are staffed 24 hours a day by local birth attendants and provide women with a safe, centrally-located and culturally appropriate facility for mothers to give birth and receive related services.
It is through generous donations and medical mission trips like mine in March where Cureamericas can "build a sustainable, effective health care program that empowers communities to save the lives of mothers and children."
It is my hope that through my experience with Curamericas that I will be able to provide my own patients the education and care necessary to greatly decrease maternal mortality. Did you know that every year, 700 to 900 women die from pregnancy and or childbirth related issues in the United States? And nearly 65,000 women nearly die. Maternal mortality rates are falling all around the world in both affluent and developing countries, yet are on the rise in the US. The majority of these deaths are preventable.
In addition to this fundraising page, I will be working extra shifts, working as a clinical instructor for nursing students (fingers crossed on this one!) and selling things on ebay. I thank you so much for your generous donations, and will be using this campaign to tell you more about Curamericas, Guatemala, US maternal mortality and my own journey as a Registered Nurse in obstetrics.
