Hi! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Keavy Handley-Byrne and I am just now finishing my first year of graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design. I am one of six candidates for an MFA in photography for the class of 2020. I was very lucky to be given a graduate fellowship through RISD, as well as two assistantships -- one running the student Red Eye Gallery and one working on The Winter Garden Photograph Project with editor Odette England, PhD. Additionally, I am a teaching assistant and am pursuing a certificate in collegiate teaching, hoping to work in arts education in the New York City area post-graduation.

I am a 28-year-old nonbinary photographer. I am constantly working to give back to my community of trans and queer family and friends, and hope to use my platform to support other trans and queer artists.

As a part of being a working artist and continuing through the MFA program, I have been applying to both interior and exterior grants, scholarships, fellowships, and residencies, and was lucky enough to be accepted to a summer residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The residency does not come with any funding, and I am therefore responsible for both tuition and my materials. My tuition is due on June 3rd!

The reason that I'm attending this residency is to get a variety of feedback from NYC artists on my work, to help it further grow and change. This will also give me the connections I need to make in-roads in the NYC art scene, and the facilities and resources to continue creating work through the summer.

I am hoping to raise money for the following:
- Tuition: $3000.00
- Materials (inkjet printing paper, 4x5 film): $1463.30
- Travel and additional expenses: $536.70

With your help, I will be able to add this prestigious residency to my resume and further my reach as an artist and photographer. I am so grateful to all of my friends and family who have supported me thus far!

Hi everyone! Thank you again for all of your donations and kind comments and thoughts, they have been absolutely invaluable and so helpful. As of today, the fee for my residency is accounted for! I am halfway to my goal of $4000 to help me make work this summer that will get me closer to my Master's degree. If you would please keep sharing my campaign so that others can continue to give, I would be incredibly grateful. <3

Hello everyone! Some fortuitous news: I have been given a couple of extra days to make my payment for the residency! I am about $275.00 away from being able to cover the entire cost of attendance, which is the most immediate cost. I’ll then need to raise money for the cost of materials. Please continue to share my fundraiser! Every tiny amount has helped immeasurably and I am so appreciative!

Wow. Wow wow wow. I am so grateful to everyone who’s donated so far. I want to give a special shout-out to my parents who have been the most supportive throughout my career path as an artist, and without whom I never would have had the confidence to pursue photography as a living.

I’m so close to being able to afford tuition for this residency. Anything helps but especially the very kind emotional support of the people I love.

Hi everyone - thanks so much to all who have given to me so far! This morning I received a bit of good news: I was offered an assistantship through RISD and ClampArt ( to help with the MFA graduate show this summer, which has helped IMMENSELY. For this assistantship, I’m being paid $1000 for the work I’ll do with ClampArt, which puts me more than halfway towards the cost of tuition! I am still hoping to have extra money for supplies, travel, and some other costs associated with the residency.

Thanks again to everyone who has given, and please share my campaign to bring me closer to my goal!
