Kayla's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
“First we prayed for God to spare her life. Then we prayed for God to guide the surgeon’s hands through 3 surgeries in 5 days. Then we prayed for God to grant her moments of relief from the intense pain. Now we pray for strength, as she learns to live for the next 3 months in a wheelchair. We will pray for patience, as she will have to learn to walk again– on one mended leg and one prosthetic leg. We will pray for acceptance, for a girl whose life will never be the same.” –Kayla’s mother

Just like every Sunday, Kayla was driving home after dinner with her grandmother. Tragically, on November 27th, Kayla was severely injured after a terrible accident caused by not 1 but 2 careless drivers, changing Kayla’s life forever.

By the grace of God, the accident occurred outside a church where the Sunday evening service was wrapping up. A nurse was there, just a matter of feet away. Had it not been for his quick and expert action, Kayla would not have survived the trip to the hospital. Once at the hospital, Kayla was told that her left leg would have to be amputated that night. Her right also suffered significant damage and required 2 surgeries.

Even as this nightmare was unfolding, Kayla and her family experienced a second blow. Television lawyers would have you believe accident victims have their medical expenses covered for life. However, insurance companies are only required to pay what careless drivers are insured for; in this case, it was the minimum amount required by law. Many costs are unknown at this point, but due to the severity of Kayla’s injuries, they are sure to be substantial.

This accident was senseless, and it would be no wonder if Kayla were bitter. But Kayla is no ordinary person. Understandably there are tough moments, but she has been upbeat and striving to make the best of her recovery from Day 1. Kayla quickly earned the love and admiration of the paramedics and medical staff who are treating her; they call her both the sweetest and the toughest young woman they have ever met. One nurse said Kayla’s optimism despite her injuries made his job easy. He summed up his praise with "I learn from Kayla."

Those who know Kayla know she has a plan for her life. In fact, her planner was one of the first items she asked for after the accident. She recently completed her first year as an accountant after graduating (a year early…that’s just our Kayla) from Truman State University with a master’s degree. She had plans for concerts, for volunteer events, supporting her Royals and Chiefs, and visiting a friend abroad. And while these plans will not happen now, will not happen in the next several months, they will happen. Because for those of you who know Kayla, while some of her plans are on hold, her life is not on hold. She is just as determined as ever, pushing herself daily during her 3 physical therapy sessions. Despite immense amounts of pain, Kayla is exceeding her physicians’, friends’, and family’s expectations.

Kayla is always the first to think of and offer help to others. And now we would like to help Kayla and her parents. Kayla’s recovery will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, with many of the expenses not covered by insurance. Follow-up doctor visits, months and months of therapy, prosthetics– the list goes on and on. We, her friends, want Kayla to be able to concentrate on her recovery, not on the mountain of bills headed her way. Please join us in contributing to assist Kayla on her journey to recovery.
