Kayla Gonzalez (McClintock High Class of 2018) was badly injured in a horrific pedestrian accident on August 15 in Tempe, the day before she was to begin her freshman year at ASU.
Kayla was walking on the sidewalk by the First United Methodist Church on University Drive, when a car heading east on University swerved to avoid a truck heading west. The car crossed the sidewalk, hit and dragged Kayla, and mowed down a low brick wall. A host of people witnessed the accident and its aftermath.
Kaya’s injuries are extensive: both legs broken in multiple places, her big toe detached (the family believes the toe, delivered to the hospital, was misplaced), Kayla has multiple screws in her legs and a titanium plate in her severely injured pelvis.
After five surgeries, and one month later, Kayla remains hospitalized.
Kayla, awarded ASU’s New American Scholarship due to her leadership at McClintock (where she was the Senior Class President and helped lead the Key Club), was excited to begin college. She must delay school and a career in sports marketing for at least a year, to recover from her injuries and learn to walk again.
Kayla has three siblings and her father, a house painter, was laid off when his company closed down. The costs of care are enormous, and Kayla has a long road ahead of her before she can be made whole again.
Kayla's in tremendous pain, and her family is reeling from the extent of her injuries, the costs of care, and the strenuous road ahead. Kayla, a spirited young woman is up to the challenge.
