Karl's Story
Our family became Karl's foster family during the Summer of 2015. However, after only a few months with Karl, we knew that our home would not be complete without him in it. We adopted him through Regina Cat Rescue, and he has been a daily source of joy and happiness ever since.
Before Karl came to us, his previous family had abandon him and left him to live on the street and survive on his own. It is estimated that he was on his own for about a year before Regina Cat Rescue trapped him and set out to find him a forever home. From here, the rest is history, and we are fortunate enough to call Karl a part of our family.
Recent Events
Karl is just 6 years old and recently he appeared to have less energy and was not acting like himself. After getting x-rayed, it was discovered that Karl's chest cavity is empty and his lungs and heart have fallen out of his rib cage and towards his stomach, leaving these vital organs vulnerable and making it challenging for him to breathe. His official diagnosis is a diaphragmatic hernia, which cause the organs to fall out of place. It is unknown if he was born with this, or if he experienced some form of trauma (for example being hit by a car) that caused these injuries.
The Surgery
Karl still has quality of life, however cannot enjoy the same things that he used to love doing such as playing with his best friend Martha, and jumping on the couch to look out the window on his own.
We have limited options for Karl. #1. We could put him down (which is the most devastating for us), or #2. because he has quality of life still we could allow him to live out his days until his system shuts down and have to make the call then, or #3. surgery.
There is a promising surgery for Karl that would allow him a second chance at life. However, this surgery costs between $3,500-$4,500. We have decided that we cannot place a value on Karl's life and would like to allow him a real chance. We really truly feel that Karl deserves a fair chance in this life, as he was dealt a very difficult hand in his first four years.
