Wigs for Kids Fundraiser

In March of this past year,  my OB/GYN found a lump in my breast during a routine yearly doctors visit.  The next obvious step, was to go get a mammogram done. Because of a miscommunication it took nearly 3 weeks to get in to have the mammogram done and it was the longest three weeks of my life.  I had been told that if the mammogram found anything, I would then be sent across the office to have another look at it with an ultrasound machine. Not surprisingly, the mammogram also found the lump and so I was then sent to have the area checked by ultrasound.  Though it was only minutes I had to wait for the doctors call back with his results, it felt like weeks or months. Though I tried to fight panic it was probably the scariest 10 minutes of my life. And when the technician came back in to tell me the doctor said it was just a cyst, I literally ran across the office and threw my arms around her. But, in that same moment, I was also acutely aware that not every woman gets the same good news.   For those of you who have seen me in person in the last year or so, you know that my hair is the longest it’s ever been in my life. In fact it now is growing past my waist! For the last few years I have had several people ask me if I was growing my hair out for a reason, to which the answer was always, “I don’t know.”  And then a few days after I got my results back, it hit me.... this is why I’ve been growing my hair out.  This is a way for me to do SOMETHING for those who sit through those excruciatingly terrifying moments and don’t get the same results I did. And so, for my 40th birthday, I’ve decided to cut and donate my hair and launch a campaign help cover the cost of making a wig. Costs for wigs can range from $400 to $1800 so I have chosen a goal somewhere in the middle. I have chosen Wigs for Kids because they need at least 12 inches and because they give the wigs away for free. Since October is breast cancer awareness month, I will be keeping this page up and running until the end of the month. I am currently waiting on a photography date to get some pictures done before the big cut but I will be sure to update you all when with a date and pictures of the big day!
