URGENT APPEAL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION!
The KANUNGU HUMANIST PRIMARY SCHOOL in rural Uganda, which is one of two Kanungu Secular Schools Project in Kanungu, South-West corner of Uganda has TODAY (Oct 11th 2019) suffered the collapse of a classroom wall due to a severe storm.
Already struggling to cope through lack of funds for food, the school has no reserves to rebuild and if this is not immediately repaired before the next storm hits, the whole building will collapse.
185 children from aged 5 to 13 attend this school and rely on it for meals as well as education.
All other buildings in the school are rough timber structured.
Founded and run by a remarkable young, local Humanist, Robert Magara, who was inspired to seek secular inspiration after reading Richard Dawkins' book, 'The God Delusion', after the terrible massacre of 780 people in Kanungu in 2000 at the hands of "religious" cult leaders; the Kanungu Humanist Primary School and the Brighter Brains Humanist Secondary School are basic building with teachers and children raring to go.
Based on the principles of Humanism which include, non-faith based education, equality, critical thinking, inclusiveness, science and evidence-based teaching practices; once fully operational these children will have the opportunity to go on to further education through scholarships.
This has been achieved in other Humanist schools in Uganda which have received reliable funding and been able to become self-sustaining, with many children going on to become teachers back in their old schools.
But, right now, we need to get the children in the school up and running again.
A little goes a long way in sub-Saharan Africa.
