Dave Kann – husband, father, brother, police officer, our friend, neighbor, and scout leader needs our support.
Last Friday, Dave was seriously injured while on a scouting adventure with his son Matthew and six others from Boy Scout Troop 151. Dave broke his pelvic bone, disconnected his thigh bone and had internal bleeding, losing 1.5 liters of blood. Dave was airlifted from the FL Keys to a trauma center in Miami where he received a blood transfusion and emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.
Kathy, his wife, flew out on Sunday to be by his side. Dave had successful surgery on Monday where doctors used a plate to fuse his pelvis together and a screw to reconnect his thigh bone. He cannot put weight on it and will be in a wheelchair for the next three months.
Dave is one of the strongest people we know; he has a long road ahead of him but he will get through this difficult journey. Our friend will need to fly home first class for the extra room the seats provide. There are extended hotel expenses to cover for family staying with Dave in Florida plus flight costs back and forth as he cannot fly back home alone. The cost of the helicopter ride to the trauma center alone is in excess of $50,000 and we believe they will be responsible for at least a portion of it, possibly up to 20% of that expense.
Our support during this time will make a difference. Dave, Kathy and Matthew are always the first ones to step-in and help out in our community. Now it’s time for us to help out the Kann Family so they can focus all of their energy on his recovery.
