Kabob the cat needs vet bill help

Our 9-year old cat Kabob was hospitalized for ingestion of foreign matter (possibly carpet fuzz).
The matter has been removed safely, but he is showing respiratory difficulty which could be asthma, pneumonia or some unknown cause.
His breathing has been stunted and the hospital is forced to keep him in an oxygen cage. Kabob has undergone numerous blood tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, etc., and we are still unsure as to what is exactly wrong.
He is receiving excellent treatment. We do not fault the vets/clinic for charging money for their services, but at day 4 of all the treatments we've already spent over $7000, all of which has had to be paid upfront.
We've asked to pay in installments but the hospital isn't budging, and our life savings are being depleted.
Kabob was "discovered" on July 14, 2007. Approximately 4-6 weeks of age, he was found twisted & trapped in an accordion style security gate in front of a Persian restaurant in Reseda, CA. After freeing him from the gate, we welcomed him into our family and named him after the restaurant's signature dish.
Kabob is an important part of our family and we love him dearly. There is nothing we wouldn't do to save him from whatever ailments he is going through, and we desperately need your help.
