Cats, Cats, Cats !  We Need Your Help!

The story is typical. You take home that cute kitten, then it grows up! The female starts yowling when she goes into heat and in desperation you let her outside. The young male starts spraying all over your house and you kick him out!

So your female is soon pregnant and has a litter of kittens. Aren’t they cute? Then a few months later, she has another litter – then another litter. She can have as many as 5 litters a year!! If the kittens are born outside, then they become feral and just keep multiplying.

Then your male cat, who is outside roaming around, gets into fights all the time. You can hear them at night – screaming and howling – waking up the whole neighbourhood.  Many of those roaming cats get hit by cars, killed by dogs or freeze to death in the cold temperatures.

Second Chance Pet Network is the only No-Kill animal shelter in Northwestern Ontario. We receive dogs and cats from the entire region, which includes the communities of Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Balmertowns, Ear Falls, Kenora, Vermillion Bay, Fort Frances and Atikokan as well as over 50 First Nations communities.

In 2014, we took in 108 cats....74 of them were between 3 weeks and 6 months of age. The shelter was already full but what were we to do? Let them freeze? Starve? Be killed by other animals?

In 5 years, we have rescued over 800 cats! All of the cats are spayed/neutered, immunized and micro-chipped before being put up for adoption. Many of these cats are brought to the shelter as adult strays or as an unwanted litter of kittens.

We need your help to continue with our Spay/Neuter program. We want to do 400 surgeries in the next year at a cost of about $100 each. Our local vets work along with us providing excellent care for these animals. We also do low cost spay/neuter for area dogs.

Please help us do our part to solve the cat over-population problem in our region by donating to Second Chance Pet Network today!

Please pray for our little lion cub. The vet think he has feline hyperesthesia. He's so little and so young that his vet said they don't make a small enough pill in a dose that he could take. So he got his med done especially for him in liquid form at the drugstore. He got his first done tonight.
ok so the way the doctor explained feline hyperesthesia to me is like mini seizures. Also like someone who lose a limb and they still feel it and can still feel pain even if there's nothing there.
Well Jackson's brain is telling him that there's something very scary happening even if there's nothing there. That's why he empty his anal glands ( some cats also empty their bladder and bowel) . And that's why he's so scared. His brain is sending him some false signals telling him stuff that isn't happening and isn't there. And it's happening to him over and over again . Even if it last only a couple second it's still very scary for him . It also make his leg leg twitch, sometime his ears and head too. So that's why he's so scared and why he search comfort or search to hide.
Today he was sleeping very deeply , not a regular sleep . The vet said that's cause the poor little guy has been running on adrenaline for 3 days! ( took this long to find out what it was) So he just crashed and his body is exhausted.
So now he's on medication for this and he also need some cream for his bum because he expressed his anal glands so much and he still is every time he has a mini seizure that they are empty . But it happened so often that his bum is all irritated and inflamated.
He is so little and so young that there's no pill they can give him . Even the smallest dose would be too big for him . So his doctor had the same med formulated in liquid form just for him.
So our little lion cub still need your prayers please. And if you would like to support SCPN we also would really appreciate it . His aunty Ann is so good to him and to all the animals. She can use some prayers and some help too if you can . There's a link on her page and I will also post it in the comment section below.
thanks everyone. Keep praying, God will get our little Miracle kitten through this too <3 and feel free to share this if you like :)

Update on Jackson from his doctor ( sorry no pic , he tried but it wouldn't load)
"Looks really good this morning
Feces are still soft, breathing still laboured but improving. It's normal diarrhea with form what you would expect after surgery and everything his gut has been through. He isn't losing much in the way of water, it's really mild diarrhea. Should get back to normal with time.
14 to 21 days of antibiotics for the pneumonia
Antibiotics, we have been giving him needles for the antibiotics and other meds
No anesthesia will be needed to remove the staples
No fever"
Thank You God for having made a Miracle for our baby boy <3 !!! Mary Our Mother and all the Saints and angels in Heaven who pray for our baby.
And thanks goes out to:
His team of medical professional at the clinic
His Aunty Ann who rescued him and who is making sure that he gets all the medical cares that he need
Everyone who are praying for our little lion cub <3 Your prayers make a big difference. God made a Miracle for our baby . Keep praying <3
Everyone who share the gofundme link and/or contribute to help pay for all his vet care ( he's still at the clinic, we don't know how much longer he will have to stay there, he still need meds and once he's all better he will still need vaccination and neuter)
And to everyone who have been there for us and are still there for us through all of this . It's not over yet but things are looking up :) <3

For people who don't know , Jackson is our little miracle baby boy kitten. He still need lots of prayers and is still at the clinic. God made a miracle for him . He survived two major surgeries in one week! But he is still at the clinic and has aspiration pneumonia. And he was only 2lbs 9oz when all this started and now he has lost weight so he's even smaller. He turned 4 months on Saturday. Ann is my friend and the owner of the shelter. She will post updates on Jackson on her gofundme page. You all know that vet cares like this isn't cheap so if you would share this Ann and I would really appreciate it. Prayers for Jackson are always appreciated too because they are heard and answered by God <3 Thank you :)

The vet decided not to do the ultra sound on Jackson....he said if it showed a blockage, he would have to do surgery. Jackson is so small he did not want him under the anesthesia twice and if the ultra sound showed a blockage, he would have to operate. So, surgery it was at about 1:00 today. Two hours later, we were told he had an intussusception (where a portion of the small intestine telescopes within itself. This is relatively common in kittens and has a wide variety of reasons it may happen. In all my years of working with and having cats, I have never heard of it. I am wondering how many have died from this because people did not know about it. Jackson came thru the surgery and was awake about 3:00. We will have to now play the waiting game and see what happens. I will be going to see him tomorrow morning as his Mom is too far away to be able to visit.

I wish I could help. We are over-run with a serious kitten problem, here where we are. I do not know how we are going to manage catching them all ourselves (both mom and I are very ill at this time), and getting them to the vet to be checked and spayed / neutered... Without a car anymore... it is a daunting prospect...

It is wonderful to see the fund growing! This is the dream. It can become reality. This is what donations can do. We are seeing the support of those in our community and elsewhere who care enough to solve the problem. They are choosing to be part of the solution! As a supporter of this initiative, I want to express my thanks to ALL who by their contributions WILL help to make it reality instead of a dream! If you have not donated yet, please, please do so. Add your help to this worthwhile cause! Wouldn't it be wonderful if the shelters of our world only needed to be used very temporarily and very infrequently? Mahatma Gandhi stated, ''The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated" What a better place our world would be if every animal was loved and cared for by someone special - if no animal had to depend on being rescued by someone because they had come into our world with no thought to the consequences. This is the dream so many people have - to "solve" the pet overpopulation problem! Enough funding can make it reality in OUR community!

Glad to help when I can. Happy to read that there is help being given to wee Jackson. If anyone can get this wee one through it it is Bob. He has such a huge heart, and always gives all his effort to help those who can't speak to ask for the help themselves. Hang in there Jackson. The fund is slowly growing. I am sharing too.
