Study Abroad in Spain

Hi everyone, my name is Autumn Green and I’d first like to say thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am currently a junior at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), majoring in International Studies and minoring in both Spanish and History. While only entering my third year at VCU and well advanced within my degree, I have achieved a second semester junior-level status academically, projected to graduate early in Fall 2019. With this being said, I have been selected to spend an entire semester abroad in Madrid, Spain to enhance my fluency in Spanish, a language that I have been studying for over six years.

As an International Studies major, I have always held an innate interest in cultures that are different than mine. From youth, I have carried a passion and desire to learn more about the world around me, including cultures and traditions, languages, literature, media, history, values, concerns, and aspirations of peoples in different countries and regions other than mine. This desire has only increased since pursuing my major and participating in classes that have further educated me on aspects of intercultural perspectives, cross-cultural communication, and global awareness.

A study-abroad experience is the next logical step for me.  This is an experience that I welcome considering my fascination with other cultures. Thankfully, I have found a study-abroad experience that I feel matches my interests and will further encourage me to push towards my goals and maximize my potential in all endeavors. Like any college student, the cost of the program was an overall financial shock which caused me to consider if I would be able to obtain my dream. However, I am determined to and I have decided to move forward with this program. In thirty years, I didn’t want to regret not studying abroad because I was too reluctant to ask for help.

The program that I am participating in is facilitated through a third-party study abroad program called International Studies Abroad (ISA) and is hosted at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Madrid, Spain. This six-month program will allow me to enroll in up to five courses at the host university with the option of enrolling in classes taught in English with locals, or a combination of courses in English with locals and liberal arts courses instructed in Spanish. In addition to the courses I will take, I will also participate in cultural excursions to El Escorial, Ávila, and Salamanca. I have opted to stay with a host family that will further contribute to the full immersion of the program. More details of the program can be found here .

The total cost of this experience is $15,995. After working two jobs this entire summer and having to return to VCU to balance both school and work, I am struggling to finance this once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m afraid that I cannot afford this program unless I seek financial assistance. With this being said, I have set my desired dollar amount to $15,000 hoping that I will be able to raise at least three-quarters of the tuition by the payment deadline in Mid-October.  Please help me make my dream come true!

I have included a cost breakdown of the same program, but for the Fall 2018 semester due to the fact that the Spring 2019 price breakdowns have not been published yet. Please note that the cost for the Spring 2019 semester is more expensive than the Fall 2018 semester due to a strong euro.
