Celebrate Ethiopian Jewish Heritage

Donation protected
On May 27, 2018, 1:30-5PM, Sephardic Heritage International DC (SHIN DC) is doing a historic celebration of Ethiopian Jewish heritage on the 27th anniversary of Operation Solomon at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, in partnership with the museum.

Because we are doing this with the Smithsonian, we cannot charge for the event and about 200 people have already registered.  We are asking for your support today to help cover the costs of music and food for this promising event, which gives a forum to the Ethiopian Jewish community to share their heritage.

This fundraiser will go until Monday, June 11th at 11:59 PM, so please contribute today. Every bit helps! $5-$10 can make a big difference.

There will be a special screening of 'Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew' (dir. Rebecca Shore, 2016, Israel, 43 min., Hebrew with English subtitles). From 1984 to 1991, over 22,500 Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel as a part of Operations Moses, Joshua, and Solomon. Young Mekonen Abebe was one of these emigrants, alongside his family—but Abebe’s father died before he could make the trip. Follow along with Abebe’s emotional journey, as he returns to Ethiopia for the first time since leaving the country as a boy, and finally gets to visit his father’s grave.

Following the film, an engaging discussion will be moderated by Ethiopian Jews Shlomit Daniel of SHIN DC, alongside Issayas Yona Bogale, whose father Yona Bogale was the first leader of the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel. Coffee ceremony, traditional refreshments and music to follow.

Interested in Ethiopia? Interested in humanitarian assistance? Interested in Jewish history? If you've seen trailers for the new movie "'The Red Sea diving resort", donate to support the history behind it!

Your support helps us to continue providing this kind of quality cultural and educational programming at institutions like the Smithsonian, allowing SHIN DC to build bridges and create a forum for learning more about underrepresented Jewish heritages. Donations and support are needed to make this accessible to the widest group possible. Each dollar gets us closer!
