Joe Mekan is a healthy and motivated young man in Denver that needs help. He was paralyzed in an accident while camping with friends on September 7, 2013 when he was just 19 years old. He is 22 now and is a complete paraplegic, he has lost all feeling and function from the waist down.
Joe will literally give the shirt off his back to a brother in need; he has done so many times. Right now Joe is the one that needs all the help he can get. I know that if we can just reach enough people we will be able to raise the money he needs to get this treatment he so desperately wants and needs.
Joe is still in great health, great spirits, and is absolutely determined to walk again. We are hoping to raise enough funds so that Joe can recieve a new invasive stimulation treatment that is only available in Thailand. If successful this treatment will allow Joe to slowly regain function and feeling below the level of injury. In order for Joe to travel, stay, and receive treatment in Thailand we will need to raise approximately $70,000.
We believe that Joe is a great candidate for this treatment and will respond positively due to his age, his current health conditions, and his enormous amount of motivation. Through the healing process after surgery to repair the bones in his spine, through extensive rehabilitation at Craig Hospital to learn how to live independently from his wheelchair, and through the challenges of everyday life Joe has remained positive and hopeful. Joe has often been the one to comfort and reassure his friends and family throughout these last two years.
If successful we know that he will utilize any and all improvement to his full potential. Joe is ready to put in the hard work that will be required in addition to the treatment he will recieve in Thailand.
