Justin's Guatemala Immersion

Dear Friends,

My name is Justin Pearce and I am senior baccalaureate nursing student at Notre Dame College (NDC). I am writing this letter in the midst of completing my Fall Semester and I have been offered a second incredible opportunity, coming up in May, that I would like to share with you all.

After my final semester and graduation from NDC School of Nursing, I will join other NDC students and staff on a mission trip. I will be traveling to a small town in the highlands of Guatemala named San Juan La Laguna.

During my time in San Juan, we will be charged with providing care for the population in the local clinics along with providing health education to children in a small school named "Nuevo Amanecer" (New Dawn). The great people of this region continue to take pride in their rich Mayan culture; however, there is a great need for wellness checks, health education, and medical supplies. I as a person and medical professional have changed since my previous trip. In my previous trip, I was tasked with assisting clinic staff in providing wellness checks, treatment, and assisting in diagnosis. My current profession as an experienced Paramedic did assist greatly in providing care and education to this developing nation; however, I learned the reality of the healthcare disparity that is plaguing our world. Many of the diseases I encountered were preventable and were related to nutritional deficiencies along with poverty. That previous trip opened my eyes to the growing need for improving public health and education along with a global awareness of healthcare inequity. The greatest gift I received from the people was simply their love and thanks. Their tears of joy will forever be in my heart and the friendships gained will never sever.

This experience while educational, will be rooted in service and community. As a student of a Catholic College, I am excited to embrace our mission of being educated "for personal, professional and global responsibility." In nursing, we are called to commit to both the welfare of the sick, injured, and vulnerable in society and social justice. This trip allows me to implement the ethical and moral traditions of modern nursing which is foundational to the profession.

I am writing to share my experience with you and to ask for your support. The trip will challenge our group to create a community that will be capable of initiating change here on campus and in our world. I ask that you support our efforts in your thoughts and prayers. I am willing to share my previous experience with you all and when I return.

We are also expected to fundraise individually $1,800 for the trip. I am investing my own money in this endeavor but we are asked to find sponsors to support us both by prayer and financial means. This holiday season, I ask that you keep us in your prayers and if you are able to send financial support for this mission, I greatly appreciate your gift of support towards the people of San Juan.

Thank you for your continued support and taking part in my mission through prayer or financial means. On behalf of Notre Dame College, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Justin Pearce NR-P, FP-C
Notre Dame College School of Nursing

P.S. If any financial means exceed the $1,800 need, that financial support will go towards other students traveling that need financial assistance along with the needed supplies for the people and children of San Juan.
