Justice for Layla

Donation protected
My mother, Shari Poppe, loves yoga. She’s become a beloved member of the yoga community in our area, and has truly embraced the yoga ideals of service and kindness. So much so, that when a member of the yoga community reached out to her for help housing a temporarily homeless family member, she opened her home to him without a second thought. However, its often those with a big heart who have their kindness taken advantage of in the cruelest of ways.

Two weeks ago, I came home and found our puppy Layla barely breathing. We immediately took her to the vet and was told that she had an array of severe injuries. An attack had left her with blunt force trauma, resulting in a hematoma on her brain, five broken ribs, bladder and liver damage, internal bleeding, damage to her vision, a black eye and ulcerated corneas due to brain trauma, and bruises covering her body, including severe bruising to her jaw.  Her nail had also been ripped out of her paw. Layla had to stay in the hospital for 10 days, and will require numerous follow-up visits to make sure she is healing properly.

We are currently pursuing other channels with police to make sure that Layla receives justice for what has been done to her. Anyone who has met her knows she is the sweetest and most loving puppy in the world. We hope she will make a full recovery with support from this fundraising. But in light of these events, we also want to put something good back into the world and make sure other vulnerable animals don’t endure the same cruel events. In addition to Layla’s vet bills, we would also like to donate proceeds from our fundraising to Bobbi and the Strays (http://www.bobbiandthestrays.org/) to help other dogs find the loving, safe homes they deserve.

Yoga Nanda, the yoga studio Shari practices at, will be holding a day of fundraising for both Layla and Bobbi and The Strays. We are asking the community to help support my mom when she really needs it, and support our community through a day of giving at Yoga Nanda, to make a positive impact big enough to outshine this horrible event. We will post more details as they develop.
