On Monday, December 4, our brother, son and husband Jesse Phinney, a documentary filmmaker and cameraman who travelled widely for work and loved to become a neighbor to people of all walks of life wherever he went, died in police custody in Cebu, Philippines where he had lately been living.

We were told it was a suicide. He had been brought in on charges of human trafficking earlier that evening, without any evidence, because of his association with local families he had befriended.

He was arrested without provocation or evidence. The nature of his death provokes many questions and extraordinary suspicion of those who held him in custody. Expensive camera equipment and drones have been seized by the NBI. A series of withdrawals from his checking account took place--after his death. And, simply, Jesse was not a person who would have killed himself--under any circumstances.

The children and mothers have contacted us to proclaim his innocence, his deep kindness to them, and their heartbreak at his death, offering us, unsolicited, messages and video testimony. We are putting together a team of lawyers and investigators to advocate for us on the ground in the Philippines, and to find out what really happened, so we may get #JusticeForJesse.

Hi everybody!

We're so grateful for everyone's support in the days after Jesse died, and continuing on.
We'll have a really big update soon--there is an investigation afoot and we are close to being able to say more publicly what we know.

In the meantime, here's what your donation has enabled us to do:
1) Repatriate Jesse's body so that we could, as his family, honor it
2) Commission an independent autopsy from a highly regarded Stateside forensic pathologist with ample experience testifying in court and speaking to the media. She has given us incontrovertible and damning evidence that Jesse was murdered.
3) Hire an investigative team on the ground in the Philippines that is clearing Jesse's name by discovering motive and perpetrators
4) Hire a skilled attorney in the Philippines who is equipped to enact justice for Jesse

YOU did this, with your prayers and your passion and your giving.
We will likely need at least another $20,000 to spend on legal fees to clear Jesse's case publicly. If you can give more, can you give, for this critical cause? Not just for Jesse, but for all who might get caught up in this culture of extrajudicial killing if the perpetrators of his murder are not held responsible?
