tl;dr: My disabled friend got ripped off by bullies - and they decided to take me to court for trying to help her out! Help us fight bullies who take advantage of disabled people and sue good Samaritans who try to help!
Why I'm Doing This
There's nothing I hate more than bullies. Especially bullies that pick on people with disabilities. It's greedy. It's immoral. It's predatory, and it's wrong.
We need to stand up to such bullies - and we need your help to stand up for justice!
On that note: allow me to tell you a very frustrating story.
The Story So Far
In Fall of last year, a good friend of mine, Janae LeClair, contacted a training company in Boise for help training her service dog to help manage her daily struggle with autism. After spending hours of my voluntary time over several weeks making arrangements and raising the funds to get her a great dog to train, we finally felt like we had found success. We were finally making some progress!
Janae chose a training company in Boise to train her service dog (I can’t mention their name here due to pending litigation), and paid for extensive professional training out of her own pocket (at nearly $4000 cost), using up the last of her savings. She was promised that, after 3 weeks of boarding, her dog would be trained and she would only need to attend a few follow up classes. When she returned to pick up Hudson, her service dog, she was presented with a dog that was not even potty trained, and could not follow basic commands.
Leaving Hudson with these people for three weeks was a very difficult decision that left her in tears - Hudson is more than just a dog to Janae, he is her constant companion. So imagine her disappointment when, after making that choice and being without her service dog for nearly a month, she discovered that Hudson had made zero progress after she gave her entire savings to this company. She returned to Boise to talk to them about it - but instead of offering a refund, or any help whatsoever, they persuaded her to attend a session of one on one training with their “professional trainer.” The results were just as bad as before. And once again, they denied her request for a refund.
What We Have Done So Far
Janae tried to file a dispute with Discover. The training company refused to cooperate, referring back to a very badly written contract that the training company required her to sign. Despite the fact that we both provided a very detailed response about why what they are saying is not true, the dispute was decided against Janae. We reached out to several organizations to try to get legal help, but so far have not had any success.
We both posted several online reviews to warn people about the company - and they responded by deciding to sue me PERSONALLY for trying to help her, and are also planning to sue Janae if she doesn’t take down the reviews.
This is bullying and intimidation at its worst - and neither of us can afford a lawyer to defend ourselves against “corporate defamation."
This is where you come in.
How Can I Help?
We need your support. We are raising money to hire legal representation, not only to defend ourselves against this company’s ridiculous accusations, but also to take them to court and win Janae’s money back, as well as help her with resources to continue with Hudson’s training, and get Hudson some equipment to help Janae in her daily challenges as a service dog.
We're not trying to make money, or get sympathy dollars. All we want is for them to do the right thing and tell Discover to close the dispute, or pay her back the money she spent.
Please consider helping us raise money to help fight against these bullies that drained Janae’s savings, refused to consider offering a refund, and then threatened to take us both to court when we tried to stand up to them and get them to do the right thing and resolve this.
This isn’t just about the money. It’s not about me, and it’s not just about Janae. This is about sending a loud and clear message that taking advantage of disabled people is NEVER okay, and that the world WILL hold them accountable for taking advantage of someone that they promised to help.
The money will be used to hire lawyers and provide legal defense, cover travel expenses to Boise to defend ourselves against their court charges, help correct the emotional and financial damage they have done, and any remaining money will be used to obtain equipment, support, and training for Janae and Hudson to help her finally get the tools she needs to train Hudson to help her with her everyday life.
