Joe’s Funeral Expenses

Donation protected
This is my dear friend, Joe. A humble and grateful man that I'm thankful to have met. I want to share a story about a friendship I'm thankful for, tell you a little bit about him, and how we first met.

About four years ago, when I was doing Detective work, we had a bank robbery here in Carlsbad. The video of the suspect matched Joe's description, and it looked just like him. I only knew of him from seeing him walking around town. When we caught up to Joe, along with FBI, we grilled him. In fact, our whole division took a turn at talking to him. Yes, Joe was nervous, but who wouldn't be. We were sure it had to be him. Joe was adamant it wasn't him. In order to clear his name he offered to show us where he lived, and consented to a search of his belongings.

When he took us to the place where he was sleeping I couldn't believe it. Now, it was his space, and although it was very poor, it was HIS space. I even asked him how he could stay in a small space, with no heat. He told us he just "made do" with what he had. We figured out quickly, he wasn't our guy.

As we talked I learned a lot about Joe. He's not an alcoholic, and he didn't use drugs. His story is his to tell on how he became homeless, but I will tell you Joe is a very thoughtful man. Very kind, and very grateful for what he does have, and he loves his family back home.

Me, Joe, and the FBI went to have coffee afterwards. Joe thought it was kind neat to be sitting down with the "FBI," he couldn't believe my friend was an actual field Agent. The look on his face when I introduced him I still smile about when I think about it.

Since then, over the years, Joe and I have been close friends. My kids know him and love him. Since I've left the department and started working at the dealership I'm closer to him now. He comes and visits me since he lives south of town, and I'm able to check on him more often.

Joe is a dear friend of mine, and I love him. If anyone sees him around town, please be kind, and know he is appreciative of anything he receives. He's excited about Thanksgiving this year by the way. A local church is picking him up for dinner, and he can't wait.

I'm sharing this because a lot of times we judge each other based off of our circumstances, looks, status, etc... Joe and I talked the day we took this picture and he was telling me how he appreciated the help he receives, but said some people are just outright mean to him. You would think after being homeless as long as he has been he would be used to some people being that way. Well, not him. He even told me he didn't know why he lets that bother him. I told him it's because he has a good heart, and he cares. He told me he's even been assaulted before for no reason, and had been recently. I worry about him all the time.

This post ☝ Was a few years old. Joe recently passed and I would like to have a proper service for him. The funeral home, Denton Wood here in Carlsbad is donating a lot of their time and service, and AR Foreman construction is donating money as well to help out. Just looking to get the rest of the expenses donated so Joe can have a proper service. Any little bit helps. Thank you everyone.
