Cancer brought Kathy Rose and I back together after 28 years. I lost my Dad to cancer in 2016. Kathy is almost to year seven of a fight with Stage IV cancer in which she was originally given just six months. When I interviewed her for my blog, she and I bonded in a way that escaped us in high school. We talk, email, and text regularly now about our writing. We’ve been working on her memoir.
Everybody loves Kathy. For as long as I’ve known her, she’s had a certain gift for life, a “joie de vivre” as the French would say. Kathy is still smiling, but underneath that grin she is really having to grind. She's lost her health, her home, her ability to drive, her savings, and her ability to earn. Nevertheless, she’s persisted – Kathy continues to be a source of daily inspiration! Kathy hasn't lost her will to live, her love for family and friends, and, most importantly, her dream to watch her son, Sean, graduate from HS.
As you’ve read on Facebook, the cancer in Kathy is growing again, most alarmingly in her liver. She’s running out of treatment options. Kathy now faces a new ten week clinical trial that will require a two week stay near MD Anderson and long, grueling days of two different forms of experimental chemo.
Kathy needs us right now! She has a small network of close family and friends upon whom she normally relies for support. This is a call to broaden Kathy's base of support and raise money to help cover the logistical costs surrounding her upcoming treatment. Will you join me in contributing? No amount to small.
