Jen's Journey to Hobart

Donation protected
I was 12 years old when my Dad went missing, washed overboard after the 1994 Sydney Hobart yacht race. He was never found.

Fast forward to September 2014, and his brother Andrew, leaves work on Christmas Island on a ‪Friday afternoon‬ and is never seen again.

Twice our family has heard the words 'He's missing'. Twice our family has languished, clinging desperately to hope of any good news, only to have that hope fade with each day that passed us by.

Over 38,000 Australians are reported missing every year, that's over 100 people every day, or one person every 14 minutes. Sometimes, there are glorious discoveries and joyful reunions. But then there are the achingly long hours, that turn to agonising days and then years and still nothing.

At every step of the way there should be a support network that any family member or friend can call upon when a loved one goes missing. In 2013, Missing Persons Advocacy Network (MPAN) was founded with that exact purpose.

My goal is to sail the 2016 Sydney Hobart not only for myself, for my Dad and for Andrew, but in honour of all of those that have had their stories cut short. And for their loved ones left behind. I hope to raise awareness for MPAN and much needed funds for the important work they do and for all they aim to achieve in the future.

To get myself on a yacht for this years race has proved difficult, if not near impossible but I have managed to find a spot. However, it’s at a considerable cost. My target is set at $10K to cover that cost and support the wonderful work of MPAN.

Thank you xoxo
