Josemiguel's Brain Surgery

Donation protected
We are starting this gofundme on behalf of Josemiguel, a TN warrior. Here’s his story.

In August of 2018 Josemiguel, a first year student at UNT, started feeling pain on the right side of his face. At first, we thought his wisdom teeth were coming in, and so we proceeded to schedule his wisdom teeth extraction surgery. The plan was for his surgery to take place during his Christmas break. Between August and December, Josemiguel’s pain was being managed by medications. Following this surgery, his pain got worse.

After being referred to a neurologist, having his first few MRI’s, and being prescribed more medications, Josemiguel was told that he had Trigeminal neuralgia (TN). TN is rare in itself, but seeing it in someone as young as a 20 year old, is rarer.

TN is described as the most excruciating pain known to humanity. Josemiguel reports having sharp pains in his face and head. His pain comes and goes, and can be described as electric shocks that last anywhere from a few seconds to twenty minutes. This pain affects Josemiguel’s ability to eat, sleep, talk, and perform day-to-day activities. His dog, Skipper, has been his support animal the past few months.

To relieve his pain, Josemiguel has been on various medications. Painkillers do not help this kind of condition, so he has been on anticonvulsants (seizure medication) as well as medications for nerve pain (like Lyrica). Unfortunately, these medications have not eliminated his pain, and he has built a tolerance to these medications. His pain is worsening and therefore, the next prescribed treatment involves brain surgery.

The procedure, a Microvascular Decompression, will separate the blood vessel that is pressing against his Trigeminal Nerve, and cease his pain. This is done by placing a cushion between the nerve and blood vessel. Two neurosurgeons have seen Josemiguel and recommended him for surgery, as MRI’s shown that this procedure is necessary to relieve his pain and return him to his normal life. Josemiguel is a young, passionate, and active individual. Your support will help Josemiguel and our family cover medical expenses. Upon his recovery, Josemiguel would like to return to school at UNT to finish his degree in Anthropology.

At this moment in time, Josemiguel does not qualify for government subsidized healthcare and cannot purchase marketplace insurance. Due to his pre-existing condition, a private healthcare plan will not insure Josemiguel until open enrollment. His operation, hospital stay, and physical therapy will all be paid out of pocket

Please consider donating any amount to help Josemiguel get the medical attention he needs to lead a normal, and pain-free life again. No amount is too small.  Another way to help is sharing this message.

We ask that you keep Josemiguel in your thoughts and in your prayers. We truly appreciate any help received in advance. We know he is loved by many.
