Mack McClendon, the bold community leader of the Lower 9th Ward and founder of the Lower 9th Ward Village was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at the end of last year. We ask that you help him and his family members aid Mack with his medical expenses and help fulfill Mack's desires to live out the rest of his time here with a quality of life.

He has dedicated his entire life to serving those around him- in particular the elders, young people, and the working class. He has given his everything in helping his neighbors and the Lower 9th Ward community come back since Katrina, He has helped thousands and thousands of volunteers to see and understand the injustices the Lower 9th Ward, a community that had the highest concentration of black homeowners, continues to face.

At this time, we need to come together as a community and show the love and support to Mack that he has taught us all about. He has connected and touched the lives of so many with his inspiration and dedication to change for a better world.

Good Morning Renata! It's hot & steamy 85 degrees here in Connecticut but feelin more like the Big Easy. I was thinking about your Dad this week ( maybe the weather - maybe just cause his spirit was visiting) , when I got the Gofundme.com email. I see your burden is still being carried and I like to continue to lessen the load. Hope you are doing well and that your days are getting easier. Keep me posted. In my prayers, Daniel

What an inspiring and community oriented mensch. I am attending a university summer institute and plan to enlighten the group about Mack and how he accomplished a dream.

I came to volunteer with my daughter at Lower 9th Ward Village 2 summers ago. Your dad touched us with his amazing dedication and hospitality. We'll never forget him.

A huge loss of a very wise man, but the seafood just got better in heaven. You did good, Mack! The world was better because you were in it.

For spring break 2012, UNC-Wilmington's Catholic Campus Ministry visited the Lower Ninth Ward Village and Mack. I was a part of that trip, and Mack graciously provided us with a very big and important education in those short days we spent together. Mack was a modern day saint. God bless him and those who knew him. Just a couple days ago, I was telling a new friend about the crawfish boil he threw for us. I'll never forget the experiences I had with Mack. What a great guy!
