My Name is Shila, I’m a social work student and currently doing an internship at WAMATA Tanzania. During my stay I came across a young man named Hussein and his incredible story. Together with my supervisor Juma, who has volunteered for 10 months now, we came up with the idea to help this young man and we need your support to do that!
Hussein is a nineteen-year-old boy who lives in Dar es salaam in Tanzania. He was only 8 months old when his mother passed away. A couple of years ago in 2014, he lost his father as well. On top of that, he was involved in a terrible car accident that destroyed his leg. Unfortunately, he couldn’t afford the surgery to fix his leg which is the reason why he is limping. In 2006 Hussein was taken to a hospital where he was tested HIV positive. He has to swallow seven pills per day in order to survive. When there is not enough food he has to get through severe abdominal pain and insomnia since the meds he is taking are very strong. Because of his health condition and common prejudices, his family has rejected him. Hussein is not even allowed to sleep inside of the house which is why he’s sleeping next to the chicken coop and rats without bed linen but with his mattress placed on top of chairs and a coffee table.
Hussein’s situation really moved us since he is very young and yet has faced so many challenges. We can’t bring his parents back, we can’t undo the past, but we can support him at this point in his life. We want to raise some money so that he can finally afford the surgery he needs to walk properly and heal his wounds. Furthermore, we want to provide him with food so that he’s no longer exposed to pain and discomfort when taking his medicine. Also, we want to change his sleeping situation and provide him with what’s needed.
Hussein is an extremely nice guy and we admire his strength and his courage to be open and honest about his story. He has bigger dreams that need his two strong legs to help him walk towards them. Let’s join our hands and restore his happiness back!
