TEAMTOM IS RAISING MONEY TO SUPPORT 5 YEAR OLD TOM DICKERSON WHO WILL UNDERGO SURGERY AND REHAB THIS SUMMER.
Meet Tom & his sister Livvie.
A twin born prematurely, Tom’s your average, amazing kid. He loves cars and trucks and trains. He has a smile that melts your heart.
Tom also has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Every CP warrior has their own set of challenges. For Tom, the biggest hurdle is spasticity--his brain sends too many messages to his muscles, causing them to work too hard all the time. It means every day Tom faces pain and exhaustion. In the face of it all, his joy and sparkle shine through.
This summer, Tom will have surgery to reduce the spasticity in his legs.
What will this surgery do?
* It will help with Tom’s daily pain and discomfort.
* It will help reduce the number of surgeries he may need as he grows.
* It will help with Tom’s constant fatigue.
* It will help him do a lot of things better that you and I take for granted--like sit, talk, and use his arms and hands.
* It will help him to live a more full and independent life.
How will the funds be used?
The family will travel to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in Minneapolis. There, Tom will undergo surgery and enter a 6-week rehab program to build his strength and get his body used to movement with less spasticity. Then, it’s back home to Boston for 2 years of therapy, taking advantage of Tom's brain rewiring itself as it no longer fights against spasticity every day.
Being with their son during surgery and rehab, means taking unpaid time off from work (6 solid weeks for Tom’s mom, Kirsten!), as well as travel and hotel expenses. Once they are home, they will have to fund therapies back in Boston that are not covered by insurance--like the aquatherapy which has shown to be the best form of physical therapy for people with CP.
