Backstory:
Meet our dear friend, Jo’Ann Derry-Bernardo. She is loving, kind, generous, and selfless. However, she also has cancer. Her latest battle is her fight against Colangiocarcinoma a rare liver cancer that has metastasized to her abdominal wall. But her battle didn’t begin one month ago. Her husband, Gary, has said, “My wife has been a fighter her whole life.” From a young age, Jo’Ann began her battle:
•Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 9
•Her father passed when she was just 14
•At 22, she almost died while crossing the street and was struck by a car
•Two years ago, she had a triple bypass at the Cleveland Clinic
•We now humbly ask for your help as she faces this latest challenge, with Gary by her side.
Her Plan:
She has consulted with Roswell and obtained a second opinion from the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic confirmed that she most likely has a genetic liver cancer and that chemotherapy is her best chance of survival. Every 14 days she will receive chemotherapy over a 48 hour period. In addition to the chemo, she needs to have a genomic testing to try and determine the original source of the cancer and to see if other cancers are present. This testing will be conducted at Foundation Medicine and will help her treatment to be more effective in fighting this disease. Jo’Ann expects to begin chemotherapy at Roswell by 3/20/19.
The Costs:
From now until September 1, 2019, they will need a minimum of $12,000 for out of pocket expenses. She does have insurance, but many of the costs are not fully covered:
•Genetic testing and deductibles at $5,000- $7,000
•Travel expenses to and from Cleveland
•Cleveland Clinic: 25% of bill (out of pocket)
•Chemotherapy and other medications
