On January 4, 2017, the Obray family received devastating news that has turned their world upside down. Britney Obray was diagnosed with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia which is an aggressive type of blood cancer that attacks the immune system. She is the mother of six beautiful children all under the age of 9. She and her family are in need of your help at this time.
Four months ago, Britney discovered a lump on her inner upper thigh and a few weeks later found another lump on her lower leg. This lump had the appearance of a bruise so she didn't think much of it and just assumed she had bumped it chasing after her young children. However, after a month went by, rather than healing, the lump seemed to be getting bigger, so Britney and her husband, Karl, decided to go to the doctor to get it checked out. The doctor thought it was an infected Lymph node and got her on antibiotics. At first, it appeared that the antibiotics were working because the swelling seemed to lessen. Yet, after a couple of weeks, the lumps had not gone away. They went to another doctor and he thought it would be a good idea to remove them.
Their insurance was very expensive and wasn't providing as much coverage as they would have liked, so they decided to cancel the generic insurance at the end of the year and switch to a better one. On December 28th, they went ahead with the surgery while on the generic insurance because they didn’t think there was anything seriously wrong, only swollen lymph nodes that needed removed which would only require a minor surgery. After the surgery, the doctor delivered the concerning news that the lumps were bigger than they had realized and they looked abnormal, so they would be sending them off for testing.
On January 4th their worst fears were realized as they received news that the lumps were cancerous. To make matters worse, when they went to use their new insurance, they found out that it doesn't cover pre-existing conditions. They frantically went out and got a more expensive insurance that was obligated by law to cover pre-existing conditions. However, that insurance won’t take effect until February 1st.
Because of the aggressive nature of the cancer, it is necessary to begin treatment right away. This will be putting a huge financial burden on their family during this month, because they will be paying everything out of pocket. The treatments are extremely expensive and they will have to make multiple trips out of town to take Britney to her appointments. Karl will not be able to work as much because he will be caring for Britney as she undergoes treatment as well as taking over the primary care of their children. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated to alleviate some of the financial pressure so they can focus on helping Britney with her fight. Please help in any way you can for this sweet family!
