Joey: A Real Life Hero of Hope

Joey’s Story

Three years ago Joey had an awful headache and was throwing up. He had an urgent MRI and a brain tumor was detected. Life for Joey and all his family completely changed that day. He was just 6 years old.

Joey had to be placed in the pediatric intensive care unit and underwent brain surgery. Unfortunately, the tumor was on his brain stem and was therefore inoperable.

Joey was treated at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he began 17 months of chemotherapy. Because the surgery impacted his motor skills, Joey also required physical and occupational therapy to help him walk again. Obviously, this took a tremendous toll on the entire family, including Joey’s sister who is only 2 years older than him- we often forget that the siblings are greatly impacted when cancer strikes.

In May of 2015, Joey’s tumor began growing again and he underwent yet another brain surgery and was started on a clinical trial. While he still suffers the side effects of the treatments, he is walking again and able to play soccer.

Even after being hospitalized countless times and being in pain, he still never loses hope and always has a positive attitude - he is truly a real life hero of hope!

We are asking for your help to reduce the financial toll and burden for Joey's family resulting from his medical care and ongoing treatment. No amount is too small, together we make a big difference in Joey's life. Thank you so much!
