Donation protected
Who: Let me introduce myself, my name is Joe Mattes. I majored in Industrial Design at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and currently I'm the Product Designer for a company named Wisteria based in DFW, Texas.

What: Made in Yame – Traditional Craft and Contemporary Product Design in Japan. This trip is hosted by the School of Visual Arts in New York City but they accept both students and non-students for this trip.

Where: Yame, Japan
When: June 16th-29th 2019

Why: Learn traditional Japanese craft and design in Japan from the artisans who do it every day.

This trip sounds cool Joe, can you give more details?

I’m excited for this trip for a few reasons. Not only does it directly apply to my career path, but it's an opportunity to visit Japan for the first time, learn from professionals about their traditional crafting and design methods related to their cultural background, and have a chance at getting a product developed and sold by the New York Museum of Modern Art.

The whole trip is planned out by SVA and has four major parts.

If you're interested in an in-depth look at the itinerary, it can be found here: https://madeinyame.sva.edu/curriculum

We will have a few introductory days in Fukuoka to shop and sight see. After that point we will take a short bus ride south into Yame where the Workshop Tours will be taking place. After we get some hands-on experience seeing and trying these traditional crafting methods, we will have about a week to refine a concept and work on getting a prototype made with help from the artisans. MoMA is going to be choosing one of the designs from the 12 people who are attending the trip, and that design will be produced and sold globally through their Wholesale program. This is a huge opportunity I don’t want to pass up. Here is a link to their most recent digital catalog: http://catalog.store.moma.org/moma-wholesale-catalog-2018/page/1

The overall cost for this trip is a decent chunk of change. The tuition cost itself is $4,000, and that’s not including a flight to and from Japan. I’m asking for around $7,000 to help cover the cost of both. Depending on flights and layovers the tickets could be anywhere from $1,000-$3,000.
Edit: Originally I listed shopping in this list in order for transparency. I will be doing some shopping, however; any and all funds I receive through here will be going to pay off the tuition cost listed above.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'd be grateful for any help I receive.
