Recently my mum has come to the UK on a prepaid trip. During this trip she informed me that she has recently been on a journey with Breast Cancer. This was a lot to process and gave me a fair amount of emotional trauma and sadness.
She has undergone surgery about 5 weeks ago to remove the cancer from her breast and in order to make sure it does not come back she needs to have radiotherapy. Unfortunately, radiotherapy is not covered at all by private health insurance in Australia. There is no negotiation about price as it is an outpatient service.
This will decimate all of my parents savings.
It could be said my mum chose to go private, so have to suck up the costs. But as she work’s in a private hospital was a natural choice and one of the benefits was prompt treatment. However, even though they have private health insurance it is not until you ‘start the journey’ that you realize how little is covered!
Has cost $12,000 so far with $6,500 due Monday and then weekly bills each Monday. Then also to be prescribed medication, to which you do not know the cost or where you are meant to get it from. This whole event has caused unexpected emotional trauma for our whole family.
Financial burden is significant and unexpected and therefore stressful and a very difficult time not only for her but for our family.
My mum is a strong woman, she always has a knack for seeing things positively even when they aren’t so. Her attitude is infectious and I know if someone else was in this position she would do anything and everything to help.
We would appreciate any help with this financial stress.
