My name is Patrick Chavis and I am the head editor at The Orange Curtain Review (www.theorangecurtainrev.com) . We are an online theatrical review website that focuses exclusively on theatre creators and performances from the Orange County area. The OC region of California has had a long history of theatrical productions dating as far back as the 1800’s, but few people are aware of our area’s artistic prominence.
The spark to start the website originated with our founder and main writer Alina Mae Wilson, an avid theatre lover who sought to bring more attention to the surprisingly numerous shows taking place. I mean this is the county that boasts South Coast Repertory and The Segerstrom Center for the Arts, both of which are renowned theatrical institutions not simply in California but around the world. It’s home to many great universities with esteemed creative arts programs. Yet even with that knowledge there is a stigma that the real talent is happening in Los Angeles. A stigma that after two years of reviewing shows in Orange County, we at the OCR can denounce as blatantly untrue.
Last year without any funding, we were able to pull together a first edition OCR Magazine and release a digital copy free of charge to our readers. In three months we were able to write a full theatre “Best-Of” section, profiles on the most influential theatres around us and much more. In this coming year we want to expand the magazine and improve on it in every way, but to do so we will need the community’s support.
