After the recent loss of my grandad on New Years Eve, mum and I feel that we would really like to do something to support a charity that lies very close to both of our hearts. So as not to do anything by halves, we have decided that a 10 day trek across the Great Wall of China in aid of Alzheimers UK would be a good way to do this.

We lost my nan back in April 2015 to Vascular Dementia, and went through a very tough 18 months with my grampa as he also was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2016.

Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia (after Alzheimer's disease), affecting around 150,000 people in the UK.

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. In vascular dementia, these symptoms occur when the brain is damaged because of problems with the supply of blood to the brain.

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Great Wall of China has to be the ultimate building project the world has ever known; constructed by human hands over 2000 years ago, it stretches across this hilly region with long spurs and watch-towers often disappearing into the mists.

Our 10 day challenge will take us on a scenic route of the Great Wall as well as having a free day in Beijing at the end of our hike. The challenge is physically demanding and offers fabulous scenery and a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history.

Mum and I will be flying out to Beijing on the 7th of September and returning on the 16th. Neither of us have done anything like this before so have no idea what to expect. One thing we are certain of is the fact it is going to be a trip of a lifetime!

If anyone can spare anything towards the cause, we will be extremely grateful, now matter how big or small the donation.

Alzheimers UK are the only UK charity investing in research into dementia care, cause, cure and prevention. They’ve committed to spending £150 million on cutting-edge research over the next decade. Every project they fund directly addresses the needs and concerns of people affected by dementia.
