Tragic Fire Displaces Jon Piana & Jesy Joy, Founding Members of Fable Farm
On Tuesday, March 28, a late-night fire caused extensive damage to a historic farmhouse in Barnard, Vermont, displacing current tenants Jon Piana and Jesy Joy, Jesy’s daughter, and their two animals.
The Family is Facing Challenging Times
Their cat Ember was pulled out of the blaze by the firefighters, surviving serious burns, and is currently recuperating in the animal hospital. Thankfully, everyone else escaped unharmed. However, this displacement and the loss of both their personal and professional property has brought challenging and uncertain times upon the family.
Your Support is Welcomed
The local community is rallying to support the family, who have done so much to contribute to the community in and around Barnard, Vermont. Temporary housing has been provided, but your financial support is welcomed as they begin the process of getting back on their feet and coping with their losses.
Fable Farmhouse Legacy
The generous spirit of Jesy and Jon has welcomed many to the “Fable Farmhouse”, the historic Barnard farmhouse, known as the site of the Fable Farm pick-ups and gatherings in the early days of their CSA. Many have fond memories of the beautiful and welcoming environment they created together, where folks from all walks of life would come out of the woodwork to join in mutual celebration. Jon and his brother Christopher first moved to Barnard in 2008, rented land and began a vegetable CSA. The Piana brothers — working together with their partners — Jesy, Brooke, and many friends, openly welcomed multitudes of local folk into their flourishing backyard garden during weekly gatherings, which quickly grew into lively community potluck events.
Once musicians played for the pass of a hat under the ancient branches of the “Mamma” apple tree at the farmhouse, but in 2013 the weekly gatherings moved to the Clark Farm on the Royalton Turnpike and grew into what is now known as Feast & Field Market . Fable Farm is now a catering/venue business and fermentory, and they continue their legacy of community building around local food along with their partners, Heartwood Farm, Kiss the Cow Farm and Eastman Farm.
An Opportunity to Give Back
Fable Farm’s presence has helped to transform Barnard, by bringing people together and encouraging more people to share their energies and talents. The local community in and around Barnard, Vermont would not be the same without the generous contributions of Jon and Jesy.
Now we have an opportunity to give back to these wonderful folks who have given so much to those in our local community and beyond. Thank you for your contribution, which helps to support them during these trying times.
*Barnard Helping Hands, a local nonprofit, has established a relief fund for the fire victims, where all donations received by check are tax-deductible, and any donated funds will be received in full.
