Jess's Medical Fund

Donation protected
In February 2016, Jess began having unexplainable episodes of disorientation. She had a four-month-old baby at the time, so she went to see her OB, who prescribed a low dose of an antidepressant for postpartum anxiety. It worked at first…until it didn’t. After several adjustments to the dosage, her doctor suggested she have an MRI. This was early June. Because her insurance deemed the MRI “medically unnecessary,” they wouldn’t pay for it. And the test was scheduled for mid-July.

On July 18, the MRI revealed a tumor. Jess and her husband, Jeff, spent the next week sharing the news and visiting with doctors. The neurosurgeons agreed: surgery was the next step. At this point, Jess and Jeff were hopeful that the tumor was benign.

On August 24, the neurosurgeon removed the tumor and revealed that it was indeed cancerous. A grade 3 oligodendroglioma, in fact! Jess was unable to speak for several weeks following surgery. She understood what people were saying, but she didn’t know how to respond. Although she’s often at a loss for words, her speech has almost fully returned.

Jess is currently in speech therapy and is going through radiation. In the first week of December, she will start chemotherapy for nearly a year.

Jeff and Jess have four children—Charlie, 9; Lillian, 7; Anna, 2; and Elanor, 1.

Jeff and Jess are both freelance editors. Right now, Jess is unable to work. The family could use your support for medical expenses and living expenses.
