On Tuesday, November 27th we received a heartbreaking phone call in the morning from our mother. She called us alone and scared, saying she went to the emergency room with a severe migraine and ended up being diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. This was a complete shock to us as she had no pre-existing condition.

After being rushed into emergency surgery, a second aneurysm was discovered and during the operation, she suffered three embolic strokes. The initial aneurysm was dynamic and expanding and without the emergency surgery our mom would have died. While in recovery, she suffered critical blood loss and needed a transfusion. She remained in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) for four days before being transferred to the regular ICU. She is now in the Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) and working every day on intensive rehabilitation. Since that night our mom has been trying to recover from complete loss of the right arm and hand and her cognitive ability to think and communicate. She continues to have headaches and must manage her pain as she goes through her therapies.

While the prognosis is positive, the surgeon and doctors do not know whether she will ever regain full use of her right hand. Her doctors have told her that she will not be able to drive a vehicle or work for at least 6 months. The most difficult part is the invisible injury of impaired cognitive function. They say that the cognitive function takes the longest to rebuild, and could be as long as 18 months or more. She will only be able to incrementally begin work after two months. She still does not have the ability for complex thinking and cannot manage day-to-day activities without continued support.

This hardship will be nothing short of extreme as she is a small business owner (CAllie Girl which is a small women’s clothing boutique in Mission Viejo). Our mom started this business five years ago without the help or loan assistance from anyone. Despite having insurance (which is severely limited in coverage during rehabilitation), there will be many, many bills that won’t be covered. With January and February being the slowest months for her business, and insurance deductibles resetting in January, this has added a lot of stress to her recovery. We are trying to do everything to alleviate stress as it hampers and even works against her ability to recover. With her inability to work, the financial situation is compounded. We are all aware of the astronomical costs of medical care, especially during a long and difficult recovery and rehabilitation process, and are reaching out due to the very difficult circumstances that lay ahead for our mother.

Our mom has always been generous in our local community, and is kind to everyone she meets. We ask those of you that have come to know and love her like we do, please provide prayers, thoughts and if possible a contribution to allow our mother to focus on her recovery. Every little bit helps.

With love,
Jared, Allie & Adam

Our Uncle Sean has been helping with her medical and financial decisions and planning and we have asked him to manage the GoFundMe page to ensure she receives the best opportunity for a full recovery.
