Hi everyone! We are reaching out to you today in order to help us bridge a gap in our mission of bringing local, sustainable food - along with some great ag education and workshops - to the heart of Jefferson County!
The non-profit Jefferson G.A.P. Coalition was formed in 2016, with the expressed mission of creating opportunities for local growers, artisans, and producers to further reach local consumers in the Jefferson County area and beyond. Our two main avenues for achieving this goal are the Charles Town Farmer’s Market – a seasonal Saturday outdoor market on South Samuel Street in Charles Town, and the Bushel & Peck grocery, located in historic Charles Washington Hall – right in the very heart of downtown. In addition to providing an outlet for our local producers and consumers to connect, we also do various educational outreach events and programs to further teach people about their food and reach under-served members of the community.
There are many challenges in meeting our goals, but we are fully committed to meeting those challenges and moving with our community into the future. Over the last seven years, between vendor sales at The Charles Town Farmers Market and inventory acquisition at Bushel & Peck, over $1.2 million dollars have gone directly into local and regional small farms and small businesses. With only one year under our belt, Bushel & Peck accounts for about 15% of that. Imagine what this number might be in 7 more years.
Yet we struggle to keep it going. Market sales across the state are down this year. There are many reasons for this but we are convinced that we can rise above. We will be using these funds to improve our store, increase our marketing, plan events, grant matching and keep us moving forward.
