Jean's Medical Expenses Fund

Dear family and friends,

I am Hasina, Shahina and Naseeba’s aunt. I put this page together in response to all the loving and caring messages I have received asking how you can help my nieces during this challenging time. This month has been a whirlwind with both girls traveling across the globe to be by their mother’s side.

Jean (the girls’ mum) suffered a huge medical setback on April 3rd. She was in Malawi when she was rushed to hospital with acute abdominal pain, which turned out to be an infected gallbladder. She underwent emergency surgery for its removal; however, what was meant to be a straight forward procedure with an easy recovery has turned into a complex and difficult journey. Jean suffered acute liver and kidney failure and had to be put on dialysis immediately. Unfortunately, Malawi is not equipped to deal with the complications that followed and it is at this time the family decided to take Jean to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she would receive better care. The other alternative was to fly her to India, however, both the family and doctors were not confident she would make the long flight.

Upon arrival in Johannesburg on April 13th, doctors promptly ran down a terrifying list of the following diagnoses: toxic hepatitis, jaundice, pneumonia, septicemia and kidney failure. She was immediately admitted to ICU where she remains currently. Doctors discovered a blocked bile duct which caused bile to build up in her liver, and in addition to this, found a leak where the gall bladder had been removed and was now causing the accumulation of fluid around her liver and lungs. Jean’s body was essentially poisoning itself. The problems were remedied by inserting a stent into the bile duct to allow the fluid to drain and simultaneouslyseal the leak. She is on oxygen, has undergone numerous blood transfusions, dialysis sessions, and, endoscopic procedures. During her recovery, she has experienced some setbacks due to a weakened immune system and a stomach ulcer which caused internal bleeding. Specialists say her recovery will be long and slow, but, are hopeful that her organs will return to normal.

Shahina has returned to the States and Naseeba remains in South Africa indefinitely. You can help the girls by making a donation to assist with medical expenses, many of which are now out-of-pocket. Thank you for reaching out to offer your help;we are trulygrateful to be a part of your tribe and community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we hope Jean can come home soon!
