JD Old Mouse Handicap Home Addition

Donation protected
UPDATE May 27, 2017.  An update from my mother Sandy Spang: To let you know how things are going with this kind man you all contributed to and care about - he did undergo two more serious problems related to diabetes and he was in rehab for a while but he fought hard and qualified for the prosthetic on the other leg. He is determined to walk again and is doing well in that area with the prosthetic although the fit could be better in the knee BUT he is back HOME with his family.

Further good news is that a group of hard working men have been visiting him on a regular basis and he now has a good deal of the work he needed to have done on the way to completion. He has a bathroom he can drive his wheelchair into with a real shower. Beautiful! As you are aware we raised enough to do some of this. As you may know that in addition to being Northern Cheyenne he is also Mandan Hidatsa and family members were able to contact other Native Brothers there who gave an amazing amount of additional funds. And we thank these kind, good-hearted people. You all make a good team.

Once the inside of the house has been smoothed out a bit and the roof put on, then he will have one major project left which is to build a few storage sheds to store all of the items that had to be moved from inside the house because no space was left outside for “necessities” and the inside of the house does not have much room for living and moving about. Remember that this house is at least 90 years old and did not have much room for storage. So now we are looking for funds to either buy or build something functional.

Jay still has his job at Colstrip Public School and although he needs the summer to recuperate he is going to get back at it next school year.

He is a strong man. We do want you to know much your gifts meant to this dear man who struggles daily but whose life is helping him achieve his needs. We plan to leave it up a few weeks more and then shut it down.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH

Native News 2017 - Driven to Dialysis

UPDATE,
Jay was moved to Advanced Care Hospital, 3528 Gabel Rd, Billings, MT, Rm # 204, this past week. No word on how long he will be there, but we were hoping to get enough money together to get the bathroom built and roof fixed before he goes home. He will need the handicapped bathroom more than ever when he goes home this time. Thank you so much to those of you have contributed, your donation is very much appreciated. Once construction starts any offers of help with the construction would be appreciated as well. We will let you know when we are getting close to starting construction.

UPDATE,
Jay has been moved to Room 617 at St. Vincent Hospital.

SAD NEWS
. Jay is back in the St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, MT (Room 606) hospital again and his need for your help is more acute.  PLEASE.

The diabetes has struck again and he has had additional surgery. It is serious and it will make life much more difficult. It will make his need for a bigger bathroom with a shower essential. He had been working toward getting his second artificial leg fitted and ready but they are working to subdue an infection in his leg as well and so he cannot do the therapy necessary for him to walk on both feet. I cannot tell you how this affects those who love this dear, kind, hard working man who has helped so many people himself. I can’t tell you how hard this is but most especially for him. He wants to be able to walk again and to continue to provide for his family. He needs this bathroom.

An additional problem has surfaced this very snowy, difficult winter. As we said his home is approximately 90 years old. We had a very heavy snowfall that melted very slowly and began to leak into the home. We were hoping to have a metal roof installed and we need help with that.

Mold will become the next issue and they have enough problems. We appreciate so much the help already received but we are begging you to consider the latest developments. PLEASE dear friends, help this deserving man and his family.

I am Sandra Spang and this is my adopted son, Jay D. Old Mouse, the maker and player of the Northern Cheyenne Courting Flute. In order to receive this honor you need to set an example for the youth of our Tribe and honor our Elders by considering their requests for his playing at whatever occasion they ask him for. He is also our modern equivalent of the Camp Crier and he is the emcee for powwows and other community events. For many years he has shared his craft and delighted people from all over the world as a member of the Cheyenne Trailriders who enter their 26th year of business. He has carried out his responsibilities with joy and has been honored by the State of Montana as a member of the Montana Circle of American Masters.
Jay has grown children but supports a family of two and has always been a hard worker, In addition to the aforementioned activities he works for the Colstrip School System which requires hours of travel per day.

He has served many people in his life and is glad to do it but now he needs our help. He has diabetes and has had to endure an amputation which he handled the artificial leg well and last summer, after finishing the last major powwow he had to go in to the hospital and he had the other one amputated. He is a brave man and working through it but his major problem is that he needs an adequate bathroom. The house he lives in is around 90 years old and the bathroom is quite small and difficult for him to maneuver in, plus it does not have a shower. Just a bathtub.

He will need to add a room to his home to have an adequate bathroom and that will serve his needs. He will be using prosthesis on both legs if all goes well but there will be times when he will have to take a wheelchair in and the door will have to be wide enough and he will need a shower that slopes so he can take the chair to get into it, if necessary at times.

He would never ask this of anyone and I feel he is such a wonderful person who has done so much for so many I am privileged to help him.

PLEASE consider this kind man and we will make sure you hear his beautiful music.

We have had a difficult winter with heavy snow and his roof is now leaking so they have been working to deal with this as well. Because his front door was old and the wind and snow blew through it he managed somehow to find the money to get a door and he and his family fixed it before the worst of the weather. A much needed ramp was constructed by friends from lumber we built for my husband's brother (Leo who left us a year ago) and was donated by the family for Jay.  We are all doing all we can to help this dear man - including Jay himself - but what we are asking is what we absolutely need your help for.  Please know we ask only for what we cannot handle. For all of those who have heard him play, who have listened him tell the history of this special flute and have mentioned it in this request - THANK YOU.  You heard him in the way he intended to reach you - in your heart.
