I joking say the Jaspurr is my familiar. Except that I’m only half joking. He adopted me almost 12 years ago. We were without any pets and went to a foster house to check out a few potential cats. When I sat down on the floor he walked right onto my lap and has been by my side ever since.
He’s been my rock through a divorce, two deaths, and multiple health scares (open heart surgery for me, diabetes for him). When my back hurts, he kneads his paws on it. When he couldn’t sit on me following my surgery, he was glued to my side.
He was diagnosed with diabetes almost exactly a year ago. And had been doing well. Up until a few days ago when we noticed he had stopped eating and appeared to be in pain. He went to the vet yesterday and was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. That visit cost just under $400. Not a huge sum of money, but after the $1000 plus his diabetes has cost, my bank account is empty.
When we took him to the vet yesterday, I was terrified that this was the end. However, the vet was optimistic and pancreatitis is treatable. But, getting him through this may be costly. As I see it, there are three possible outcomes:
1. Best case is the treatment he’s gotten so far (subcutaneous fluids, pain meds, and an appetite stimulant) is enough for him to get better.
2. He gets better but only after more vet visits for additional fluids, potentially a feeding tube for nutritional support, and additional meds. If this is what he needs, costs could skyrocket.
3. Worst case is he starts going downhill, I do everything to help him, and he still doesn’t make it.
You may may have noticed that simply giving up and putting him down now is not something I even consider as an option at this time. This is treatable and after all the support this sweet boy has given me over the years, I owe him my best effort.
Any help you you can provide to help me get him through this is appreciated more than words can express.
