van repairs

Jason has been paralyzed from the chest down from a broken neck for 18 years, and is committed to living a full life. He recently completed his doctorate, started a full time job teaching college, and transitioned fully off of Social Security and Medicare due to an increase in income. The exciting transition has has left him with a number of additional expenses.

Jason’s a first-year college professor. He started his career and still works with Denver's Phamaly Theater Company--a troupe made up entirely of actors with disabilities-- and now teaches theater at a midwestern college. He also has a daughter who just celebrated her first birthday.  Earlier this year, she had surgery to resolve a congenital lung malformation. The surgery, thankfully, went very well, but left his family with a number of medical bills, some unexpected, that they are still paying off.

They had to move across the country just a week after their daughter was born in order to start Jason’s new job on time, so they didn't have the opportunity to conduct a full search for accessible housing. Jason and his wife are trying to save up for a down payment for a  wheelchair accessible house (they are currently having to rent a semi-accessible condo, far from his work and way above the average price range in the area), but they keep getting knocked back down by medical and disability-related expenses. Plus, their house isn't truly wheelchair accessible and they have expenses for additional adaptive equipment.

Jason needed wheelchair repairs at the time that he was waiting for new health insurance to kick in and just got an unexpected bill for $950 for a new seat cushion and the repairs.

He also needs new wheelchair batteries and tires not covered by insurance, which will cost $1,388.35 and the cost of the new tires is $240.

Jason also recently purchased $1500 of absolutely necessary wheelchair accessible bathroom equipment, but insurance doesn’t cover.

Finally, the lift on his wheelchair van, which he drives to work, recently needed repairs that came in at $1600.

Jason doesn’t want to ask for too much. Just a little help covering these expenses that are absolutely necessary to maintain his job, but are keeping his family from having a fully accessible place to live.
