Jason's Trans America Bike Race

Donation protected
On June 3, 2017 I will realize one of my life dreams as I line up at the start of the TransAmerica Bike Race in Astoria, Oregon with one goal: to make it to the finish in Yorktown, Virginia as quickly as possible, and with no help whatsoever. The 4300 miles in between is only one of the hurdles I have to overcome - there is a significant amount of gear, food, accomodations, and travel expense involved, and I will be taking a month off of work in order to compete.

The Trans America race is a true test of determination and resourcefulness. Racers usually complete the race in 18-30 days and must find food, water, and shelter as they go - without the help of friends, family, or strangers.  Each day is unpredictable. Since the first person to arrive at the finish wins, most racers typically ride 16-20 hours daily and the food demands for this much riding are huge - estimated to be 10,000 calories EVERY day! Accomodations usually consist of a sleeping bag on the ground in a secluded spot behind a church or in a park. Hotels are nice, but it is prohibitively expensive to stay in them more than a few times during the course of the race (at least for me). There is something in me that truly believes I am capable of finishing this race in the top 5 places, and I want to find out.

While I am participating in the race, I will be simultaneously running a fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Centennial Trail in Spokane, Washington. This is a group that advocates for recreational trail construction in the Inland Northwest. As many of you probably know, the Centennial Trail and other trails in the area are widely used and are a valuable resource to our community.

This GoFundMe page is to help defray the costs to be paid by me so I can participate in the race. My estimate for my out-of-pocket expenses (not counting the missed work) is $12,000. If you would like to help me achieve a monumental life dream, I would be genuinely grateful - it could mean an extra night in a hotel and a shower!

You can keep track of my progress preparing for the race and how the race progresses by following my Facebook page, my Wordpress blog, or my Strava account.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my GoFundMe page!
