Here is the back story- it is a beautiful one!
Jason and Evan are two sweet guys who live in a small local group home.
Evan is my son. He is cognitively impaired and cannot speak. He is happy with a few simple things- watching Jeopardy, splashing in water, a long ride in the car. Like a toddler, Evan is soothed by car rides. Slow drives also curtail his seizures. So we hold his hand and cruise our neighborhoods, every day. Many of you have probably seen us- we go awfully slow. At every stop sign, I kiss Evan's cheek.
Jason is Evan's roommate. Paralyzed after an accident, Jason had been through some unimaginable pain before we found him. We are lucky to have met this beautiful soul, and honored to offer him a safe home and new friends. We also found Jason's long lost family- many extraordinary turns of event for this fiercely proud, funny, protective man. But Jason remains alone so much of the time, and lonely. He wants to go visiting. He wants to give, he wants to show up, he wants a girlfriend- and he needs wheels.
More than anything, these guys deserve to be part of our world- not stuck in their home, not waiting in hopes of visitors, not confined to a bed because there are no options.
Watching these guys in their rooms, staring out a window
Watching Evan hand car keys to a caregiver, hoping hoping hoping she will take him for a ride
Watching Jason in his bed, as I leave after a visit... knowing he will still be lying there anytime I return-
This is some heartbreaking. bullshit. And we intend to fix it.
Evan's caregivers use their own cars to transport him. They drive him hundreds of miles a week. They pay for that gas out of pocket. These amazing people change a man's diapers, shave him, feed him with a spoon- for about 11 bucks an hour- and also have to drop $50/week on gas for Evan's rides.
Jason is very smart and social and chatty. He is happy to have new friends visit. He is overwhelmed by the books, treats, and games donated to him. He has a lot of bedbound activities.
But Jason is in bed 95% of the time. Transportation for Jason and his wheelchair has been a disaster of disappointments- the SMART bus has been so dumb. Private vans are $100 to take Jason to a movie and back. Jason lives on disability funding. We are his landlords, as well as his friends, and we supplement every part of his life so he doesnt have to worry about finances every day. He has been robbed and betrayed- those days are over. We just need help to put that past behind him.
So anyway.. we want to buy this Chevy Uplander for the boys.
Jason's wheelchair will roll right in.
Evan can settle in for a ride and hold hands- maybe with his roommate Jason, who treats Evan like a little brother.
We are fundraising to buy it. We negotiated the sales price to $2000.
Aiming for another $1000 for auto insurance coverage for a while.
Maybe you can donate a gas card. Maybe you can just send us love and positive energy.
