Do you feel helpless seeing starving children in Africa? Are you tired of reading about African immigrants dying on their way to the Western world to escape poverty? Do you want to help the Africans to create a better life for themselves, by giving them a sustainable means to survive? If you answered yes to all of the above, then you are at the right please.
JANET + GEORGE is an online platform that I transformed to support African designers. I believe the only way that Africa can be lifted out of poverty is through job creation.
After a recent visit to Ghana, West Africa, I discovered the multitude of talents the country has to offer. With little means, people were creating designs that would easily sell for high-end prices in stores in Europe. Yet, these talented people survive on less than one dollar per day, and no means to hire staff to scale their business. The problem they all had was money. The talent is there, the resources in abundance, and everything is made by hand and unique.
When I got back to Europe, I kept thinking about the problems facing Africa. From my own personal experience, I thought that every problem I saw in Ghana, had a solution. I had thousands of idea’s I could do if I lived there. One thing that kept coming back to me, was job creation. This would solve all the problems of Africa. I then decided to incorporate the creative talents Africa has to offer with my fashion start-up JANET + GEORGE to promote African designers.
JANET + GEORGE is an online platform to discover and support African designers. I work with African designers to promote local fashion talent, encourage manufacturing with African artisans and support the development of regional export capacities.
I’m setting up an African Designer programme to help put Africa on the global fashion map, and showcase the creativity and talent of African designers. The African Designer programme will encourage African designers to produce locally with African artisans and stimulate job creation on the continent.
The African designers selected for the JANET + GEORGE African Designer programme will be given the opportunity to showcase and sell their designs on my platform www.janetandgeorge.com. Throughout the programme, I will provide mentoring, guidance and support to the selected African designers.
The JANET + GEORGE African Designer programme will be launched in Assin Fosu, a small town in the Central Region in Ghana. This region is known for the weaving techniques of the Kente cloth, and the 'last bath' of the people taking into slavery.
I’m raising funds to help set up a production centre where quality clothing, shoes, bags, accessories and homewares can be produced by African designers and artisans.
Your donations will enable me to build the production centre in Assin Fosu, provide financial aid to the selected African designers to kick-start their first collection for the global market, and have a place to work and create jobs.
