James support through Hodgkin Lymphoma

Donation protected
As most of the Team at Defence Force Recruiting Melbourne and the broader Teams around the country are aware, Melbourne’s Officer Entry Enlistment Coordinator James Dempsey-Hamilton has recently been diagnosed with Advanced Stage 3 Hodgkin Lymphoma.

What is Hodgkin Lymphoma?
Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that begins in the white blood cells called lymphocytes. It is one of the two main groups of lymphoma. The other group is non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Hodgkin lymphoma is sometimes called Hodgkin’s disease. The name Hodgkin comes from the doctor who first described this cancer. The disease usually starts in a lymph node at one or more places in the body, and is often first noticed in the neck. It can spread through the lymphatic system from one group of lymph nodes to another, and to other lymph tissue, particularly the spleen and bone marrow. Sometimes Hodgkin lymphoma appears in several parts of the body at the same time. Occasionally, Hodgkin lymphoma spreads outside the lymphatic system to form a tumour in other organs, such as the liver or lung. This is known as extra nodal disease. Each year in Australia, around 600 people are diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. Overall, Hodgkin lymphoma is a rare disease accounting for around 0.5% of all cancers and around 10% of all lymphomas diagnosed.

Treatment
Hodgkin lymphoma usually responds well to treatment, and most people who are treated for Hodgkin lymphoma go into remission. This means the symptoms of Hodgkin lymphoma decrease or disappear

On behalf of James, we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who have reached out to James directly or indirectly to offer support and assistance to him. We are completely overwhelmed with just how many people have reached out including how supportive our Senior Management Team in Defence Force Recruiting and ManpowerGroup have been and we can’t thank you all enough for the difference you are making for James.

James is an immensely proud person but I’m sure that the won’t mind us sharing with you all that it hasn’t been easy for him to go through by any stretch and some days are much worse than others. In between his treatments James selflessly focuses on what he can do to continue to support our Officer Entry candidates to achieve what they have set out to do, by potentially having a successful career in the Australian Defence Force.  James’s passion, drive and resilience is remarkable and inspiring.

Rest assured that the Team around James will continue to foster his ability to continue to contribute, whilst also being mindful that sometimes we have to step in and take the reins and reassure him that his candidates are in good hands and ask him to focus on his health during critical treatments. James started his first round of chemo on Tuesday 17th December and has just finished his second round. Part of James treatment is participating in a trail doing 4 days of treatment every 3 weeks for a minimum of 16 treatments/4 cycles.

Not knowing what to expect until it happens can be very daunting especially when you are dealing with something as serious as Hodgkin Lymphoma as well as dealing with so many new faces and names of specialists etc. It’s such a small world as some of you would know……..  but as James began his tests and treatment would you believe that one of James treating doctors recognised James name on his patients list and would you also believe that this Doctor was applying to become a Specialist Service Officer in the Australian Army. So this Doctor was actually one of James candidates. James finalised his Doctors application late last year when he was Appointed into the Australian Army as a Reservist Medical Doctor, so we know James is in good hands as he continues his treatment.

During his time at Defence Force Recruiting James has had a substantially positive impact on the Team around him and our candidates. For such a young man his experience and expertise are impressive, that being said his ability to let his hair down and have fun with the best of them can keep most people on their toes!

If you have a moment over the next few days or weeks to reach out to James and let him know that you are thinking of him, maybe even pick his brains on some ideas based on his experience it will do James the world of good. I ask this because I know that James is the first one to do the same for other people in their time of need.

Again, I would like to thank each and every one of you who have reached out to James and continue to do so but if you are able to do a little more and can spare a few dollars to support James more he would be immensely grateful. I know that it would make a world of difference to such a young man who has made such a difference to so many other people in the role that his does so passionately at Defence Force Recruiting and ManpowerGroup.

Go Fund Me Details

Fiona has created a Go Fund Me page to support James and his family during this time to help with the following:

·         Transport to and from the hospital and specialist visits

·         Medical treatment and specialist fees

·         Anything else James requires during his treatment (meals etc.)

James lives just under 10 kilometres from his treating hospital, James is currently required to go to the hospital every day for appointments. James doesn’t drive and it is highly recommended that James does not use public transport due to low immune system, so his mum is taking time off work to travel 1.5 hours each way to transport James to and from appointments. Which is having a huge impact on his family and James.
