On May 24th, 2017, James Richard Schmitt, age 64, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home into the loving arms of his Savior, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Bonnie Ellen Schmitt, along with their six children and two grandchildren.
Jim supported his family with hard work and endurance, on the single income brought in by his piano tuning business. When he was not tuning pianos, he performed as a renowned tenor soloist throughout the Pacific North West and was a Vocal Professor at Marylhurst University, and taught vocal instruction in high schools and studios all over Portland OR. He filled his family's home, and his city, with rich music, but an artist's income rarely matches the treasures he gives to others. With his absence comes not only a great void in the hearts of his family, but also the loss of their sole financial provider.
Jim and Bonnie’s two adopted children are still at home, working their way through junior high and high school, and Bonnie and her older kids are now searching for ways to help make ends meet while also providing her and her two youngest kids the support and care they need in this difficult season. Her adult children are working to help in every way they can, but things are really tight.
This memorial site has been set up to give you the opportunity to provide care and financial support for this dear family. Any amount would help. We are hoping to make it possible for Bonnie to take the months ahead and focus on caring for her children and herself, rather than needing to jump into the workforce soon after loosing her husband. If anything, covering the cost of the funeral expenses would be a huge blessing!! Your support and prayers are greatly appreciated!!
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday June 3rd at 2pm. St. Anne's Chapel at Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, OR.
