James Millard - #TEAMSOGB

James has been with Special Olympics for almost ten years as part of the West Midlands Ski Group. In that time, James has competed to a National level. Now James has the opportunity of competing at an International level: he has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Alpine Skiing competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, one of the biggest events in the Special Olympic global calendar which will attract over 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from over 110 countries.

Thanks to Special Olympics GB, James has become more assured and disciplined which has an impact on what he can achieve beyond sport. James volunteers as a gardener once a week and attends the Maltings Adult Learning Centre three times a week.

For the athletes, going to the Games is not only about participating in their chosen sport: it’s about meeting athletes from around the world, making new friends, having fun, daring, improving their health and challenging preconceptions about people who have an intellectual disability.
