Help Jade Go To Howard University!

(I have also entered GoFundMe's #MarchScholarship and won! )

My name is Jade Walters and I am incoming freshman at Howard University.

Growing up, I had a strong idea of who I was going to be. Watching shows such as Untold Stories of the E.R, Grey’s Anatomy, and House M.D, intrigued my young mind and ever since I was in elementary school I knew that I wanted to join the medical field. Seeing the nurses and doctors running around to ensure the wellbeing of their patients made me happy. I knew that I had to be like them. I have always been a very caring and nurturing person. Whenever someone would ask me for help, the word “yes” came to me as naturally as breathing. I didn’t know what it meant to deny help to someone and I still don’t know today. That’s what I believe is the most important part of being a healthcare professional: the ability to be so selfless and indefatigable in the pursuit of caring for another human being.

In October of 2016, I began the process of applying for college. College has always been an upcoming chapter in my life. Even if I didn’t know the field I wanted to pursue, I knew that obtaining secondary education was imperative and essential for my future in society. Throughout my college search and application, I came across a school that would later become my dream school: Howard University. The infamously known HBCU that educated amazing African Americans such as Diddy (Sean Combs), Phylicia Rashad, Toni Morrison, and Taraji P. Henson. Howard’s core values of excellence, leadership, truth, and service stood out to me more than any other school I applied for. Living in a single parent household has had a major effect on who I am today. I did whatever possible to make my mother proud such as maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout my middle school and high school years, completing competitive internships throughout New York City, and serving my community by volunteering at Bellevue Hospital.

In December of 2016, I applied to Howard University along with nine other schools. Where I’m from, college is perceived as a luxury. My mother didn’t make a lot of money for me to attend anywhere I wanted but persistently urged me to apply and have faith. With the coaching and prayers from her and my sister, I knew that I had to.  As weeks went by, gruesome amounts of anxiety and nervousness circulated my household.

Would I get in? Would they like my essay? Was I really good enough? All of these questions lingered in my mind but the most important one had a permanent seat in my head: How would I be able to afford this?

On February 17, 2017, I was accepted into Howard University for their nursing program in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. As I read the email, I was in complete shock and overwhelmed with so many emotions that I couldn’t figure out what to say so I simply screamed out of joy.

In March, I received my financial aid package which offered three loans (Federal Unsubsidized, Federal Subsidized and, Direct Parent PLUS) and one grant (Federal Pell Grant). I plan on taking out the aforementioned loans and the grant which will total up to $34,870. I have and will continue to apply for scholarships to help with the difference and lower the loan amount I will have to take out.  The difference between the cost of attendance minus the aid package, which is the amount I currently need, is $7462.

Any funds that you're able to provide will be greatly appreciated for my attendance to Howard University. This money will strictly go towards the university to pay for my first year at the school, with any extra going towards dorm items and books for my classes. I never in a million years thought that I will be creating a GoFundMe page but with prayer and faith, I know that any one of you today can help me reach my goal of attending my dream school.

Sincerely,
Jade Walters
