The statement seemed to echo through the hospital cafeteria as he said it.
Today is Jacob Beck’s 27th birthday and instead of the above statement being tied to expectation for what the future might hold for him and his bride Laura, it was tied to one of sobering concern as the reality of the car crash and its devastating effects continued to settle in.
Late last night, after celebrating with family in Louisiana, Jacob and Laura and their two dogs jumped in the car to make the trip back home to Tennessee. Jacob drove, Laura slept in the passenger seat and the distance from Louisiana grew. Hitting bad weather in Mississippi around 11:30pm their car spun out of control and off the highway, rolling, it slammed into a tree and crushed the passenger side. No air bags deployed. Physically, Jacob and their two dogs were fine. Laura was not.
Laura suffered a broken back. More specifically, the C-6 vertebra in her spine was crushed and with it came a complete loss of feeling from the waist down. The doctors in Mississippi have given her a 1% chance to ever walk again.
Tonight, Jacob sits by his bride’s side to give her some sort of comfort as she recovers from the first of multiple surgeries. This is day one of what will be a long and difficult road to recovery for Laura and they will need all of the support that family, friends and friendly strangers are willing to give.
So many who have already heard have asked the same question, “How can I help?” Well here is the answer.
