Jacob Thompson Memorial Bench

Donation protected
Jacob Thompson was a 9 year old boy who spent half of his short life battling cancer.  He was diagnosed at the age of 5 with stage four neuroblastoma, which is a rare cancer that most commonly affects young children and it accounts for seven out of ten childhood cancers.
Jacob’s favorite holiday was Christmas, but sadly his family was informed by doctors that he would not live to see it.

Jacob had one simple request before he passed which was to celebrate Christmas one last time.  Jacob's simple request was to receive Christmas cards in the mail.   His request went viral and before long, tens of thousands of people came together to help make it happen.  Jacob received pallets of mail from all over the world.   Sadly, almost a month after his Christmas request, Jacob lost his battle with cancer on Sunday, November 19, 2017

Jacob and his father, Roger, always enjoyed the time they spent together playing at the Eastern Promenade playground located on Munjoy Hill. Roger has always dreamed of setting up a bench in the area to continue Jacob’s memory.   Because this playground that brought joy to Jacob and his father is located in the very neighborhood that we protect, the firefighters from the Munjoy Hill Fire Station are looking for help to raise money to bring this project to life.

The City of Portland’s Parks & Recreation Department has a memorial bench donation program that allows for a new bench to be purchased for the cost of $1,500.  Included in this fee is a new bench and a small plague that will be inscribed with Jacob’s name and a message (to be chosen by Jacob’s family).  The $2000 that we raise will be used to purchase the bench and cover any other additional costs that may arise with the installation.  Any remaining funds will be turned over to Jacob's father, Roger Guay, to help cover any expenses that they have remaining associated with Jacob's medical care.

It is our hope to reach this goal by late spring/early summer so that the bench can be purchase and  installed at the Eastern Promenade playground to honor Jacob's memory before the end of summer.
